Abstract

Removable partial denture(RPD)s are useful treatment options for partially edentulous patients. However, abutment teeth
of RPDs have higher risk of periodontitis, dental caries, and root fracture than non-abutment teeth. As a result, individual
tooth survival rate of RPD wearers, it was reported that survival rate of abutment teeth was a significantly lower than nonabutment teeth. Therefore, when designing RPDs, selection of abutment teeth should be based on multifactorial
assessment of crown root ratio, periodontal pocket depth, occlusal support, and existence of previous root canal
treatment. In this review, we determined prognostic factor for survival of abutments of RPDs and suggested guidelines on
the selection of RPDs abutments.
